2018 Spin-Off

REGISTRATION IS OPEN

https://www.alpacareg.com

This year's fleece competition is making a special promotion that involves entering the remaining fleece from the animal you are entering in the spin-off.  This is called COTTAGE FLEECE and gives you an easy path to maximal results and great feedback.  You already have the fleece out to pull the spin-off sample (2-3oz only), so all you need to do is insure the remaining fleece is properly skirted, forms filled out online and included in the mailing to make it even more beneficial.  And no worries about losing points on weight because the weight of the spin-off entry is added to the cottage fleece!  See the Fleece page for more details.  In addition, if you enter three (3) Cottage Fleeces, you will be granted a 4th entry at no additional cost (free reward)!  And both the spin-off and the cottage fleece entries get WRITTEN scores and feedback which you receive!

Here's a link to the Spin-off Rules shown below - 2018 TXOLAN Spin-Off Entry Rules

You may participate in the TXOLAN fleece show even if you are not attending the show by mailing in your Spin-Off(s). When mailing in your Spin-Off(s), you acknowledge that TXOLAN Alpaca Association, Inc. (TXOLAN) or any of its agents will not be responsible or liable for any samples not received in time for the show or lost in the mail. Samples mailed are done so at the owners’ risk and expense.

Entries are to be submitted in a clear, unmarked, plain, gallon-size zipper type plastic bag with the completed Spin-Off Entry Tag inserted in the bag. A photo no larger than 4" x 6" of the alpaca from whom the fiber sample was collected shall be included with the entry.

Fiber shall not be carded, combed, washed or otherwise enhanced, but should be handpicked to remove debris and vegetable matter.

Staple length must be a minimum of three inches and all other AOA Fleece Show rules regarding length of fiber apply to the Spin-Off as well.

Entry must be made in the name of the alpaca and current owner as matched to the ARI Registration Certificate or Owner of Record for Show Entry Form and must accompany exhibitor’s entry signed by owner of record of the alpaca as shown on ARI Registration Certificate. A copy of the ARI Registration Certificate must accompany the entry form.

Entries are subject to the Exhibitor Rule and are limited to three entries per breed type, per age division at time of shearing, per color designation.

Entries shall not be shown beyond 380 days of the shearing date (Sheared after January 24, 2017).

Juvenile Fleeces must be 183 days at time of shearing or 6 months of growth to be eligible.
When registering a Juvenile fleece, if the fleece being presented before the judge was the FIRST shearing and the cria was not shorn or tipped after being born, then the previous shear date is the cria’s birthdate.

Fee for entering the Spin-Off competition is $25.00 for full members and $30 for all others.

Spin-Off Entries must be RECEIVED by the Spin-Off JSupervisor by Saturday, December 30, 2017.  (Posstmark should be by December 27, 2017)

Please mail your 2 oz. fleece sample, copies of your ARI Certificates (Please ensure the copy of the ARI is of the original and not a “Certificate Copy” downloaded from the ARI site) & 4 x 6 color photograph of the alpaca (full fleeced) for your Spin-Off entries to:

For those that have questions about how to prepare a spin-off sample please read below:

How to prepare for an AOA Spin Off
Author: Marjorie Phipps
Date: Sept 2013

You will need:
A table. If you have a skirting table that is the best, if not you can make do with a regular table.

  •   Tweezers
  •   Credit Card or Small piece of stiff cardboard
  •   Postage Scale
  •   1 Gallon Zip Lock Bag
  •   A copy of the ARI Certificate for the Alpaca entered in the Spin Off
  •   A color photo, no larger than 4 x 6, of the alpaca.
  •   A copy of the registration for the show
  •   Fleece tag from the show registration site.

READ the AOA Show manual section on Spin Offs ! Pages 72 – 74
1. Spread your blanket out on the table, cut side up.
2. Examine the blanket for a prime location to pull a sample.
3. Select a sample of fiber from the prime section of the blanket. This would be the center of the side of the alpaca where you would take a fiber sample from for a histogram.
4. Select a relatively large area of the fiber using your best judgment of between 2 – 3 ounces. Once you have done this several times you will get to know the amount you need based on the density of your alpaca.
5. Check for any second cuts or nubs from the shearing.
a. Gather the sample together and hold tightly in your fist.
b. Take the credit card and “swipe” it several times across the cut end of the fibers. Firm enough to loosen any nubs but not pull the fibers up.
6. Place your sample in the 1 Gallon Bag.
7. Weigh the sample on your postal scale. Make sure you have between 2 -3 ounces of fiber. Over 3 Ounces is not encouraged, fewer than 2 or over 4 will get you deductions.
8. Remove the sample from the bag and clean it of all vegetable matter.
a. Grab the sample by the cut end, holding it tightly; shake it and pat it with your other hand to remove loose dirt and debris. Bounce it on your table a few times.
b. Put the sample on your table, cut side up. Carefully open the bundles and using the tweezers, remove any debris that is left. Be careful not to disrupt the structure of the fleece and bundling.
c. Flip the sample over and repeat step b.
d. Keep flipping and cleaning until you are satisfied with the sample.
9. Carefully arrange the sample into it’s natural shape. Gather it into your fist and insert it into the 1 gallon zip lock bag. If your bag has a white box for writing, put the outside of the fiber (the dirty side) to that side of the bag. Remember your sample will be graded on First Impression ! 5 Points
10. Insert your 4 x 6 photo and Fleece Tag on the dirty side of the fiber inside the bag.
11. Compress the fiber if needed to fit into your shipping container. Zip the bag closed.
a. DO NOT WRITE ON THE BAG or THE PHOTO !
12. Make sure your shipping container is large enough to accommodate your ARI certificate UNFOLDED. I usually Roll mine up and secure with a small piece of tape or paper clip. The Medium size flat rate USPS Priority boxes are exactly the same size as the ARI. They will hold up to 6 -8 samples if you compress them enough.
13. Place your ARI certificates, Samples, Payment (if paying by check) and a copy of your registration forms into the shipping container. Address the container and put it in the mail so that it is post marked BEFORE the deadline.
